Foundation for Landscape Studies

VIRTUAL RARE BOOKS
In a trial project to make the Foundation’s collection of rare books available for viewing online, we worked with Armadillo Systems, a London-based developer of Turning the Pages software. We created two books, the first being Atlas zu den Andeutungen über Landschaftsgärtnerei or Atlas to Hints on Landscape Gardening, by Prince Hermann Ludwig Heinrich von Pückler-Muskau, a very rare first edition published in 1814 which depicts the transformation of Prince Pückler’s 3,300 acre estate (i.e. the landscape designer’s pitch book). The second book is Magazijn van Tuin-sieraaden or Storehouse of Garden Ornaments published in 1819 by Gijsbert Van Laar which is compendium of a series of catalogues that show various kinds of garden follies, sculpture, gates, bridges, and furniture as well as sample layouts intended to inspire garden patrons and designers during the Romantic era. In addition to being able to turn, rotate, zoom and advance to specific pages, the publishing platform also allows for pop-up translations of the original German and Dutch text.
